据《环球邮报》(Globe and Mail) 报道，新华社驻渥太华记者李保东早在2018年5月底就申请续签其访问者居留许可（visitor record），到现在仍未获批。这并不妨碍他继续以外国媒体记者的身份在加拿大工作，但没有合法居留身份意味着他无法自由出入加拿大。他的妻子也面临同样问题。 ; E! C1 k. H" O, g4 A8 n( Y" l 0 h+ ]& D' a1 F9 Y$ k4 F- ^  _ 　　根据加拿大移民部网站上的信息，续签访问者居留许可一般需要等候90天。李保东说，他对自己已经等候四百多天感到惊讶，而移民部并没有给他任何解释。 　　另一方面，加拿大广播公司法语部（Radio-Canada）在2018年6月为一个摄影师向中方申请记者签证，也是至今仍在等待中。一位公司发言人说，他们的驻北京记者的电视报道因此受到了影响。 　　李保东说他不知道两件事是否有关联。但是移民律师库兰（Richard Kurland）在接受《环球邮报》采访时说，他认为这两件事从外交关系层面上来说是联系在一起的。不过李保东至少可以向加拿大联邦法院起诉加拿大政府。
